KINGSDON CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
September 2009

After a lovely but somewhat damp summer break the school returned to business in early September. The new Reception children are settling in and by the time this goes to print will have started staying for the whole day. It's lovely to hear the squeal of children playing outside and enjoying the Indian summer.

With parents of children due to start school in September 2010 considering their options, the Governors and Staff are working hard on promoting the school to continue encouraging local children to come and take advantage of this super village school. If you know of anyone interested or undecided on where to send their offspring do ask them to contact the school for a prospectus/visit.

Compton Dundon and Kingsdon Church of England Primary schools continue to collaborate and will join together in early October to see a play with the House of Fun Theatre Group.

Finally do come to the school Harvest Festival Service on the 2nd of October. The children will be bringing gifts of fruit and vegetables which will be sold after the Church Service on the 4th of October in aid of Farm Africa.

News from Somerset Waste Partnership

Garden waste collection service expands throughout South Somerset

All households across South Somerset will now be able to opt in to a garden waste collection service.

South Somerset District Council's District Executive committee has approved plans for Somerset Waste Partnership to offer chargeable garden waste collections to all households in the district, improving on the current system which only offers the collection to those living in settlements of over 1000 households.

The change is possible in part due to the introduction of new collection vehicles with approximately twice the capacity of the vehicles they will replace.
A project team has now been established to plan the implementation of the expanded garden waste collection service. Customers already on a waiting list and those who have previously enquired about the service will be the first to be offered the opportunity to subscribe. Others will be able to sign up shortly after that, with collections expected to start in late October.

New subscribers to the wheeled bin collection service will be charged £60 if joining between October and March 2010, covering the service to the end of March 2011. The annual charge for people joining or renewing for the year commencing April 1st 2010 will be £42.50, which is excellent value for 25 fortnightly collections each year. The alternative option of compostable sacks which some customers prefer, will still be offered.

Collections are fortnightly (except during Christmas week, so equals 25 collections per year) and you will be given your collection day when you order the service.

To register interest in subscribing to the garden waste collection service contact South Somerset District Council customer services on 01935 462462.

Somerton Household Waste Recycling Centre switch to winter opening hours

From 1st October, Somerset's eighteen Household Waste Recycling Centres will switch to winter opening hours. The sites will open at 9am and close at 5pm. They open seven days a week, only closing on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Recycling makes a difference

With taxes it now costs around £60 to bury a tonne of refuse in a landfill site. In Somerset that means tens of millions of pounds literally thrown away every year. Recycling helps reduce disposal costs, saving money for the community. Please remind friends, colleagues and neighbours that using their recycling services is good for the environment and for their pockets.
